DESTINATIONS

Faro, Portugal

Date visited October half term 2005.

Location Almancil

Duration 5 days

Transport and accommodation was provided by 'wheeling around the algarve'. We were met at the airport by a rep for the company - who was very friendly and helpful - and picked us up in a wheelchair accessible Kangoo, which we were to hire for part of the holiday. The vehicle was fully equipped with clamps, which would fit most wheelchairs.

We stayed at Casa Julia, which was fully accessible villa, with wide doorways easily accommodating my wheelchair of 65cm wide. They also provided a hoist and commode/shower chair for a small additional fee. The hoist was a portable one, which was useless for my electric wheelchair because it didn't lift high enough or get close enough to the wheelchair. We didn't use it. There was a heated pool with raised sides for easy access.

Pavements and kerbs are not very wheelchair friendly, with poorly maintained roads. They can be negotiated with some help. It is common for cars to park on pavements, which means you often have to go on the roads to get past them.

There were many supermarkets which you would have no problems accessing with a wheelchair.

Las Vegas

Date visited May half term 2001.

Duration 5 days.

On arrival in Las Vegas we were able to find one of many wheelchair accessible buses, which took us to our hotel on the Strip.

We stayed at the Riviera, one of the strip's older hotels. We booked a 'handicapped' room with 'roll-in' shower. There was plenty of room to manouvere the wheelchair. The roll-in shower was accessible, but did not come with a suitable shower chair.

Public transport was excellent, with most buses on and off the Strip fitted with wheelchair lifts.  However, I was able to travel the full length of the strip in my wheelchair, with no problem.
