In 1988, two mothers of duchenne boys, Elaine Edmunds and Sue Cardwell decided that they wanted to do more to raise money for research.

With the help of the then Regional Officer, Don Moreland, they arranged a meeting for everyone interested in forming a new branch of the MD Group.  This was attended by parents of children with MD, friends, medical staff from Clatterbridge School, and Dr Seager a pediatrician who looked after most of the children.

Professor Edwards addressed the meeting accompanied by Pat Murphy (now Sudlow) who later became our Family Care Officer.

With Don's help the Birkenhead & District Branch was formed and later grew into the Wirral Branch.

The first committee was made up of Lee Scarratt, Dave Edmunds, Kathy Bell and Sue Cardwell.  Dr Seager agreed to be Branch President and continues to act in this role.

Clatterbridge School very kindly offered their premises for our monthly meeting and the branch continued to meet there until the school closed. The medical staff at the school played a large part in the branch and have always been willing to help with fundraising etc.

Over the years we have raised a large amount of money for research.  We have held coffee mornings, collections, dances, dutch auction, attic sales, car boot sales, race nights, sponsored swimming, bonfires, barbecues and outings.  We have had a lot of fun, met many new people and, hopefully, helped to support families.
